These brass plumb bobs were affixed to a string made from natural fibers, such as hemp or linen. The brass plumb bobs featured a conical shape with a pointed tip, similar to the plumb bobs used today. This allowed for greater precision and durability. As civilizations advanced, so did the materials used in plumb bob construction.ĭuring the medieval period, European builders began to craft plumb bobs made from brass. These early plumb bobs were typically made from stone or lead and were rudimentary in shape. In ancient Greece and Rome, plumb bobs continued to be employed in various construction projects. The Egyptians used copper plumb bobs as early as 4000 B.C.E., while the Mesopotamians used similar devices around 3000 B.C.E. The concept of utilizing a weighted object to establish verticality can be found in ancient Egyptian and Mesopotamian cultures. The use of plumb bobs can be traced back thousands of years to ancient civilizations. Overall, a plumb bob is an indispensable tool for maintaining verticality and ensuring precise alignment in construction, carpentry, masonry, plumbing, and other related fields. Longer strings are commonly used for outdoor projects, while shorter strings are more convenient for indoor and smaller-scale jobs. The length of the string or line used in conjunction with the plumb bob can vary depending on the specific application. The use of a plumb bob eliminates any errors that may arise from relying solely on visual estimation or measuring devices. The plumb bob serves as a visual indicator of the direction of gravity, allowing construction workers, craftsmen, and surveyors to establish accurate vertical lines. This vertical alignment creates a true vertical reference line, enabling precise measurements and alignments in various construction and surveying applications. The weight of the plumb bob ensures that it hangs vertically, aligning with the force of gravity. It is typically made of metal, such as brass or steel, and has a pointed tip at the bottom. It was pretty dang cool.!! I love hanging around old timers.!! They have cool ways of solving little problems.Read more: What Is A Plumb Bob In Construction Definition of a Plumb BobĪ plumb bob is a weighted object that is suspended from a string, wire, or line. Moved the bucket and finished drawing the cross hairs on the ground. When he got the Plumb bob over the center dot inside the bucket he marked lines on the ground corresponding with the outside cross hair lines. It didn't take all the swing out but almost. Then he filled the bucket with water and let the plumb bob drop down inside the bucket of water. Then he made a center dot inside the bucket. What you got.? He got a 3 gallon bucket and used a sharpie to make cross hairs on the bottom of the bucket then up the side of the bucket about an inch. He came up to me and said do you want to know a little trick to get that plumb bob to quit swinging.? Sure. An 80yr old retired engineer was visiting the job sight. There was a good wind blowing through the building and I was having heck getting that plumb bob still enough to get a mark. I think they are a must too.!! I had to get a mark down from a roof to the floor one time and it was almost 40ft high. Tommy I have three plumb bobs in my truck at all times too. I do not like the self leveling ones.!! I have seen them screw up too many times.!! I like to manually set mine.!! RC You can calibrate most of them yourself without too much problem. It also lets me hold my tape still in high winds which can be tough to do.!! In my opinion they are a must.!! Google Transit level and you will see a ton of them ranging from $80 to $900. This lets me go back to my level, read the measurements I need then move to the next one. I will hook my tape to one end then hook the bottom of my tape to another. I carry two strong strong magnets with me. Anyway they are well worth the money.!! When you start using them you will start figuring out new ways to use them and they become your right hand. They have some that will shoot within 1/32 every 100 feet up to 400ft I believe. Mine is not very high end but it will shoot within +/- 1/8 at 100ft. A builders level is a must for building anything perfectly level over any distance. You can square things up with them shoot a grade% with them and allot of other cool things that I don't know how to do. A transit is awesome for shooting grades up hill or down hill. I was raised calling them a transit but yes it is very different to a transit.
